There is no need to sign up for a full term or lock in the same time each week.
I wanted to create guitar lessons the way I'd want to take them. It’s a given that everyone’s busy (duh), so the last thing I want to do is to lock you into an arbitrary weekly commitment or another thing to feel guilty about. When you’ve got the time, I’ll make the time for you (not the other way around).
Using adult learning principles, the lessons will focus on your goals and help you to fast-track them. There'll be time for theory later, let's get you playing your favourite songs first and then we'll double back another time if needed.
Whether you’re building your chops, refining your chops or you’re ready to rock your chops off, I’m here to help.
How it works
Select your preference for length of a one-off lesson or select a pack of 4 x 30 minute lessons. This will take you to a booking page and you can select a time slot which works for your calendar. When you book, you can also include what stage you’re up to in your learning (just beginning, a weekend dabbler or confident at the campfire after a few bevvies) and what you would like the lesson to focus on.
The internet is a wealth of information, I encourage everyone to access what's out there. I'm here to help support you in understanding the basics better, so you can continue building your musical skills when it suits you.

Frequently asked questions
Can more than one person join the Zoom lesson?
As a general rule yes, the only proviso is that both people are at a similar level otherwise the session may not be as helpful as it could be. This could be a great activity for partners over the winter months.
Will i need any fancy equipment?
You will need a phone, laptop or tablet which has a video camera. I need to see what you’re doing and you need to see what I’m doing. You will also need to be able to connect to the internet. That’s it! Oh, and like your guitar (obvs)
What instruments can I learn?
At this stage, guitar, bass, ukulele or mandolin. I have previously taught piano and even some drums, however I do not currently have the recording capability for these instruments set up. If you’re hanging to learn though, reach out, we’ll see what we can do.
What if i want to learn a song that's not really a 'guitar' song?
A song is a song, I can adapt anything you want to learn in an easy format for your instrument.
Can i purchase a lesson/s as gift for someone else?
Absolutely, we'd be more than happy to make up gift vouchers for your friends and/or family. They can choose to use the vouchers at a convenient time of their choosing.
Can the lessons be recorded so i can rewatch them later?
Sure can. Just ask (in advance) and I can record the lesson and shoot you through the recording afterwards for you to peruse at your own leisure.
What if i'm in a different timezone or country to you?
So long as you have a good internet connection and a time that suits us both, you can learn from the other side of the world.
What if i speak a different language?
With google translate and a few keywords in your preferred language, we'll be able to communicate through the wonderful international language of music. Plus, it's a good excuse for me to learn some of your language too.
You mentioned adult learning, do you teach children too?
I mainly focus on adults, teenagers or anyone who has the ability and permission to operate the internet independently. I'm happy to teach younger children, but will require a guardian present for every lesson.
So who’s this chops bloke?
Brendon “Chops” Houlahan hails from country NSW and started learning music in high school. Initially drawn to the bass as there was already a guitarist and drummer nominated for his high school’s garage band Brendon picked up his first bass at a local swap meet and was off.
Self-taught in the days before the internet (in country NSW, the rest of the world had it), Brendon is passionate about the accessibility of learning and playing music. Over the years he’s taught all ages from early childhood music to retirees who finally have the time to pick something up. Regardless of who he’s teaching, he focuses on making music fun and goal oriented.
Brendon has toured extensively up and down the east coast of Australia with his band, The Barren Spinsters and has played in Japan with the Kevin Windross Band.
